[Music] parkrun we like to dress up for a special occasion and this was a Halloween actually this is the first year I was in parkrun 2012 Halloween and there's dick as as the devil with his trident where he was prodding people he didn't think we're running fast enough here shall we eat cake no way up yes superwoman this is me I'd won I'd won the best rider this this girl always used to beat me always used to beat me and I beat her that year and you can see that on the smile of my face that was a big achievement that was the first time I ever won the best rider she was really unhappy we were quite competitive the three of us used to you know go against each other my husband and I used to run round Gladstone Park we'd get about half-past seven eight o'clock run and this particular morning we saw some flags up we said what's going on he said oh this is Park run this is new it says about our fourth run the fourth or fifth round I think come and join us so we did I've been doing volunteering for a lot of a lot of the time if I meet somebody I like to know about them I like to know a little bit about their background where they're coming from so that it's just interesting people interest me hey Rosco and this is Rosco our Park run dog who started off as a puppy let's go down to the start thank you sometimes when we're when we're at parkrun you've got somebody coming along oh this is my first time I don't know how I'm gonna do it etc and you just sort of chat to them take their mind off it calm them down say you can do it this is fine you know it's just a run in the park [Music] it's an important place for me after my first operation I was determined within a week to walk up to the cafe up to the top and have have breakfast I got diagnosed in late February early March of 2014 the diagnosis was that I had a tumor in my right breast which was very very deeply situated which was why I hadn't actually been able to find a lump or feel a lump I was on a real roller coaster one appointment oh it's tiny you know we can you know just get that out next appointment oh it's enormous it's a mastectomy and so I didn't feel ready to tell anybody apart from my closest friends and family what was going on cuz I didn't know what was going on it's nice when you get groups of runners coming together and then having a little run-in at the end with my with my cancer journey or whatever you call it I dealt with it by having a box inside my head and either the books was closed and I was out there is me nobody knew or the box was open and I'm like I am now so you have to get on with it you close the box and you get on with your life only Christmas 2015 park run the event director Glenn announced to everybody that I'd had an operation for breast cancer and it had all gone well and I was on the mend and and that was the moment that everybody knew what my problem was so you know it was out and and I I knew the result so I could actually deal with it [Music] slowlyslowly I used to run in the park on my own and then one day I had my running gear on with my jacket over the top and I arrived quite late dumped my stuff down and then started to run and you know people as they were overtaking me and you know going round and afterwards were yeah they were wonderful wonderful encouraging me and saying so glad to have you back and yeah it was very moving park run is cancer because yeah everybody helped me get through it and complete strangers would come up well not not complete strangers but runners I didn't know particularly well would do what I did to them would come off and encouraged me [Music] and I could go out there every week and run do it [Music] good lot of runners today nearly 250 that is good park ron has given me 60 friends who've helped me through this period of my life that I wouldn't have had otherwise [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
